A coven of witches was today claiming victory after developers changed the name of a £350 million shopping centre after a year-long dispute.

"Highcross Quarter" was a pretty feeble name anyway, although mildly better than "The Shires". Although the neopagan website is claiming primacy, it is interesting to note that it registered its domain name on July 14, 2006. This is also the day that the new name of the shopping centre was published in the local paper, the Leicester Mercury. This seems rather a coincedence.

is Highcross the name of the church they knocked down to build a shrine to Mammon ? (Not that I'm saying they knocked down a church but they might have done)

It's just after Highcross Street (which, fact fans, used to be called High Street, while High Street used to be called Swinesmarket). No church by that name. They did uncover the lost medieval church of St Peter (http://www.le.ac.uk/ulas/projects/margarets.html), though (the thing St Peter's Lane is named after).

I'm sure there's some tenuous remark about the Witch king being in the Shire(s) just waiting to be made. :P

I thought Highcross was a great name - not only is it locally significant rather than the generic 'Shires' but it was also the mediaeval centre of Leicester and hosted the busiest market for a good few hundred years. In that sense, it was Leicester's first shopping centre :)

It's more the "Quarter" part I dislike. But what's wrong with the Swinesmarket Centre? :)

Hadn't thought of that :)

It'd be worth it, if only to piss off the extremist muslims who successfully campaigned to have a local woman remove porcelain statues of pigs from her windowsill because they passed them on the way to the mosque and were 'offended'. How she felt about having strangers staring in wasn't recorded.

A case of a crook making a lot of money

I have worked with clients, a charity, of the company that developed the witches website. He tried to get members of staff to pretend to be witches of this coven so that he could win this case - he is my opinion a crook. He left the charity I work without passwords to their computers or the ability to control their website.
