(no subject)

I accidentally made a cake on Saturday evening. I'm shocked, I tell you. It was quite nice. I need to learn how to do the icing business and then I can make a cake for [livejournal.com profile] timeplease's birthday.

Bab5 continues. We watched Parliament of Dreams, Mind War and The War Prayer on Wednesday, three solid episodes. And The Sky Full Of Stars and Deathwalker coming up this Wednesday.

This news story amuses me - East Midlands Trains staff are to be issued with - I quote - "atomic watches" - which are "accurate to the second"!. I will brave the possibility of chronometric radiation poisoning at the weekend when I go visit parents for Easter. I am probably returning on Easter Monday, so I will miss Sunday games.

The question does beg: What were you trying to make that turned into a cake?

I can give you an easy method for icing, but no quantities. If you're not scared by the concept of "splodge" as a culinary measure I could try typing it out...

Well, I broke a couple of eggs to make an omelette with and then I realised that I had that the previous evening and I thought "well, what else can I do with 2 eggs?", and I had the other ingredients...

Sure.

Ah - that makes sense in it's own way...

Butter Cream Icing:
- Splodge of butter (softened) or margarine (maybe about 30g?)
- heap of icing sugar/powdered sugar/whatever it's called here - it should be all sugar, anyway and not with stuff mixed in to make it icing already

mix in a bowl with a knife. you should get a pretty thick mixture. (somewhere between thick cake batter and biscuit dough)

Add a dash or milk - this stops it tasting like butter and sugar mixed together (it works. go figure *shrug*) and whatever flavourings you want - plain cocoa powder (added with the sugar) works well, as does vanilla essence and grated lemon rind and stuff like that. You can colour it easily if it's a plain colour, too.

You should be able to spread it on the cake like - it should sit nicely and not drip anywhere and it can be piped if you want to make pretty pictures on the cake.

I recommend making a few sample batches to practice getting it right. Of course, this does mean you have to eat it if you haven't made a cake... Wouldn't want to waste it :P (Such a chore!)

(I have recipes for insane honey marshmallow icing that is sticky and sweet and tries to take over the world and I think a cream cheese icing that goes really well with carrot cake in a notebook at home, but I can't pass them on until at least Tues. night.)

Thanks! I will give that a go.

more of an unintentional cake then ? Take a Geiger counter with you on the train and scan any random ticket collectors (a box with meter and tendency to make increased buzzing noise if waved around would be more effective though :D )

"Atomic" is such a 60s word.

[identity profile] tearsofzorro.livejournal.com 2008-03-17 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
And an 80s word if you think of Blondie. :)

And a 2000s word if you think of Kittens. :) :)

Somehow I had not previously noticed how odd that band name was. Thank-you for bringing it to my attention.

I can see the lolcat potential. Green kitties?

That article makes me wonder if we'll see an article in the next 10 years saying something like "Wrist cancer up in East Midlands". :)

They should give them atomic whistles, and give everyone ear cancer!

I need to make more games events as I enjoyed the Carcassone (even though I came last)!

I think I'm tube walking next Sunday anyway.
