Sunday afternoon I dragged myself to Hendon along with some of the food from the party for [livejournal.com profile] ewtikins' emergency picnic. We ate food and chatted. And we got a horn demonstration! Was fun, even if it did involve going out to the wilds of zone 4. Then we rickrolled a squirrel.

Following this I popped back home to pick up games and comics and then to the Pembury, despite being kind of tired. I am glad I did, as the company was excellent.

This evening [livejournal.com profile] ruthi and [livejournal.com profile] ewtikins and [livejournal.com profile] hairyears came and consumed pease.

As I am now satisfied with my mastery of the art of sponge-cake-baking I am going to try for shortbread and flapjacks. I have the recipes my mother uses. Any recommendations?

Tired now. Maybe bedtime.

'Tis only zone 3!

(I was made of fail hangover, or I would have made it all of the 3 minutes walk to the park...)

I *love* the idea of an 'emergency picnic'!
what crisis, one ponders could provoke such an emergency?!

anyway, flapjack is a constantly evolving art. I'm a snob and make mine with organic everything (except syrup which seems impossible to find). Experiment with wrapping them up as soon as they come out of the oven for chewy flapjacks or getting them out of the tin and on a wire rack pronto for uber-crunchy ones. I tend to put sultanas in mine. Some people swear by chocolate chips. Or grated apple to feel virtuous. Different kinds of sugar (light/dark etc) for more different effects. endless fun - and calories!

Someone was at a loose end in Hendon for a couple of hours and I had a lot of food that needed eating up. Hence emergency.

This recipe works well for me: although I add chopped in half glacier cherries, and use unrefined sugar (has a higher syrup level so cut back on golden syrup accordingly (or it will not solidify (it goes straight from too soft to pick up to burning if you don't))).

I am always more confident when I know the basic principles of the recipe has been backed up by scientific method:
