Sounds like the typical technology adoption trajectory: people are excited by the cool stuff and start by showing off teh kool without actually doing anything particularly interesting - and not even using the technology to its full capabilities.
Then someone uses it properly, with a compelling story to tell that the tech enhances or enables, and shows what it can *really* do.
I think you could draw this out for every single technology in the visual arts -and if there are exceptions, they will be damned interesting.
