Feb. 15th, 2005 11:26 pmThe answer: probably not. Reasonable turnout, if they can keep this number up long-term it will be fine.
Got talking with one of the committee members about language and linguistics. It was suggested I could do a talk (or maybe find someone to do one). I am thinking "Where did our language come from?" would be a good one, starting with modern loanwords, then to Latin/Danish, then going backwards towards Germanic and Indo-European. I have no idea whether I can pull this off but it's something to think about.

Feb. 14th, 2005 01:20 pmIs Music Corrupting Our Youth tomorrow. Apparently there will be a music quiz beforehand at around 6pm. It will be interesting to see what the turnout is like - the first two had many many people - the opening one being very topical (Titan), and the second one being a big gun (the inventor of DNA fingerprinting). Hopefully it will settle down to a sustainable number.

Feb. 1st, 2005 11:23 pmGood evening. First - pub with Ez, Phil, Finn, alcohol, then going to the Cafe Scientifique.
Unfortunately I missed the start of the talk. Alec Jeffreys turned out to be a really really really good speaker. And brave enough to make a gag as follows
Then I went to the fish and chip shop and now I am eating fish and chips.

Feb. 1st, 2005 02:14 pmGoing here this evening probably.
In other news, I have solved the quandary of what to do with the dollar I won at the last one. I have decided to give it to Ez who is going on holiday to New York tomorrow, to get her to buy something for me. *wonders what you can get for a dollar*

Jan. 30th, 2005 07:41 pmCalmed down quite a bit since last night. Everyone was stressed, and suchforth. Having a migraine as bad as I've had for a few months : luckily it has got a bit better this evening. If I'm as bad tomorrow morning as I was this morning, I'm not going into work.
Cafe Scientifique again Tuesday! This time we get to meet Alec Jeffreys, the bloke who invented DNA fingerprinting. Anyone else coming?

Jan. 18th, 2005 11:57 pmThere was indeed beer and science, and now I am slightly the worse for beer! I also won a poster of random Titan images downloaded from the intarweb, which is was cool, and a dollar bill. I could have won another poster also were it not for the fact I didn't get onto the chair soon enough.
I took photos of
riak, who I am only now told is called "evil Gary". Why was I not informed of this earlier?
Any suggestions for things to do to the dollar bill?
