Suppose a person wants to increase the pagerank of a given site, so that it appears higher in the search results for particular terms. The pagerank of the site will increase if lots of sites link to it. Of course, one way of doing that is to make the site good, so that people will want to link to it, but another and more evil way is to make a lot of pretend sites yourself, and make them link to it. Some people do this by making blogs containing nonsense and links to their sites; some are more sophisticated (the Co$ has a huge operation just maintaining lots of sites which link to one another). Google tries to weed out the blogs which are just created to increase another site's pagerank, but it's harder for them to do so if the blog looks real, especially if it's a program rather than a person doing the weeding. So one way for the lowlife who do this to get rank is to copy all the public text out of someone else's blog.
you have any friends whose personalities are so weak that they might pretend to be someone else ? Or are blogspot creating fake entries to boost their community figures ? I've seen people complain that folks have been pretending their photos are them but not full blown posting theft
I have a friend who deleted her LJ after some pretty nasty LJDraaama which involved IRL people stalking her as well as accusing her of some pretty awful stuff. There was police involvement where she was told to ignore them and they were told to stop harrassing her.
Last month she found that someone had managed to 'hack' her livejournal and was uploading posts which were sufficiently like her own to convince people that it was her. She has no idea how they've done it, but is understandably unhappy as it is about 9-10 months since the LJ draama started and she was finally resolving some of the real-world repercussions which resulted at her end.
The Internet is just another tool for slightly crazy disturbed people to do crazy disturbed and sinister shit...
