Saw The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse this evening, with [livejournal.com profile] darkstream, [livejournal.com profile] landvaettir and [livejournal.com profile] sunnie_dee. I have never knowingly watched the series - but have a vague familiarity with a few of the characters because the people on my mud think for some reason it is funny to endlessly repeat their catchphrases.

So. As a League of Gentlemen newbie, I still found the film quite funny. There were bits where it seemed everyone else was laughing and I wasn't, but not many. However, I don't think it's made a convert of me.

League of Gentlemen is amazing. It's just unfortunately destroyed if you reduce it to the catchphrases which the fans are apt to do. There's also the fact that it's not really quite great as a comedy so much as it's great as a compilation of dark, slightly and disturbing things which often having you laugh at them because you're not sure how else to shake off the strange feeling of discomfort the last scene left you with.

Might try to catch some repeats.

I think the best bit in the film was where Herr Lipp realises he is a bad joke. "I can do a whole show just with you, doing innuendos!" says the writer, "You're very easy to write for". "I see", says Lipp, in a way that indicates his view of the world is crumbling...
