A New Hope
re-watching this (got shiny dvd version for my birthday) for first time since I saw Revenge of the Sith. early scenes with Obi-Wan's "I don't recall ever owning a droid" and Lars's "Wipe its memory" have a difference significance. want to know what Leia's original plan was - she wanted to bring Obi-Wan to Alderaan for some sort of help, hence the ship being in orbit of Tatooine (not just a coincedence).

Date: 2005-06-26 09:05 am (UTC)Hmmm.... I remember seeing that fragment of a hologram, decades ago: "Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope" and Luke's adventure beginning. As far as I've considered a 'history' to the story - never a productive exercise with fiction, all recollections of real events are riddled with inconsistency, why should fiction be any different - I'd guessed that Leia knew that Vader was closing in, and that she'd never pass on the information about the Base being discovered, about the Death Star finally reaching operational readiness, and it's fatal weakness.
She was almost certainly told the secret of Obi-Wan's survival by her adoptive parents - or maybe she had heard a rumour that a jedi survived in hiding on Tatooine - and she hoped that he could act as a courier for the vital data. I doubt that she knew the whole truth.
Kenobi must have been horrified that she contacted him, knowing full well that Darth Vader was in pursuit.
Oddly enough, I can remember hearing that pleading voice quite clearly; I remember seeing that hologram crackling, scattered with static and flickering out-of-synch: "Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi, you are my last remaining hope". Memory plays tricks, I guess.
